Surfrider Climate Education Project Application

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Sufrider Climate Education Project (CEP) is a pilot project in Ventura County in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation and CivicSpark to educate the community about climate change and sea level rise through bite-size conversations and infographics. Education is the first step towards an engaged community. Climate change, sea level rise, and other coastal issues are complex problems that require the engagement of people of all walks of life. Starting in March 2018, the CEP team will set up a booth at Surfrider’s monthly beach clean-up to bring climate education to volunteers and beach visitors. Through one-on-one conversations and flyers, the team will spread the word about the local impacts of climate change. Teaching community members about the science and impacts of climate change and sea level rise will allow residents to make decisions that are more sustainable and equitable in their daily lives. To this end, the CEP team is recruiting volunteers to help with education material development, media outreach, graphic design, youth outreach, and Spanish translation. This is a collaborative project and CEP team members will all equally contribute to shape this project into a successful education program. All team members will work with each other and with the project manager (Angela Kim).
TIME COMMITMENT
This is a 5-month leadership position from March to July 2018. The monthly time commitment includes a monthly team meeting (2 hours), monthly beach clean-up (3 hours), and individual work (5-10 hours). Regardless of position, all members are required to attend the team meetings and monthly beach clean-ups. The individual work will vary from position to position. In total, the hours amount to **~10-15 hours a month**.
OPPORTUNITY
As this is a pilot project, team members will have ample opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the development of materials and outreach strategies. Students interested in developing careers in community outreach, education, climate change, and environmental science are highly encouraged to apply.
