DESCRIPTION:Join Surfrider at one of our monthly beach cleanups!  Most of the items collected at beach cleanups are plastic that don’t truly biodegrade. It is important to host cleanups because we want to help protect the coastal wildlife that we love! Below you will find what to wear\, our liability waiver form\, where to park\, and the 2018 scheduled beach cleanups. \nMeet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street\, Ventura \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear: \ncomfortable clothes \nclosed toed shoes \nsunscreen \nAll volunteers are welcome to participate\, but must sign a liability waiver found here. \n*Pre-­registration is not required unless your group is larger than 25 people.* If you plan on bringing a group larger than 25\, please email Ryan with how many people you expect at: beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org \nVolunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. You can download the waiver again\, here. We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. \nPlease be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up. We need this information to help find solutions for the main sources of trash on our beaches! Check out what we found in 2015 and 2016. \nThank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean. Look for the Surfrider tent when you arrive at a beach cleanup to check in! \nWhere to park at C Street – The Surfrider tent and check in is located where C Street meets the Promenade. The most convenient parking is at the multi-level parking structure\, but they charge and we don’t validate. There are a couple of free parking options within a short walk. The free parking on Paseo De Playa often fills up quickly\, but the free parking off Front St. typically has space\, then you can take the walking bridge over the freeway to the promenade.

SUMMARY:Harmon Canyon Work Day with Runners For Public Lands
DESCRIPTION:Want to help prepare Harmon Canyon for public use? Love to run? Then this event is for you! Ventura Land Trust is teaming up with Runners For Public Lands on October 26th to connect runners of all abilities and anyone who is interested to open space preservation\, outdoor recreation\, and habitat restoration. This sneak peek of the preserve is your chance to come out and help build trails that will be used by the community for years to come. Ventura is lacking in public trails and we need your help to change that! \nVentura Land Trust is currently in the escrow for this fantastic preserve\, this process could take over a year before we can purchase the property. In the meantime\, there is plenty of work to be done! We will be working on clearing brush to reduce fire hazards and building trails for the public to enjoy once we have our grand opening. \nThe event will start at 7:30 am with a run through the canyon (that is not yet open to the public outside of Ventura Land Trust led events) to preview the preserve that will go to 8:45 am. The volunteer work day will begin at 9:00 am where we will work on removing invasive plants\, clearing and preparing trails\, and restoring native habitats within Harmon Canyon. \nFor field work\, we ask that you please wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy closed-toe shoes (preferably hiking boots)\, sunscreen\, hat\, and reusable water bottle. We will bring gloves and tools\, though you are welcome to bring your own if you have a particular preference. \nWe provide the tools; you provide the enthusiasm! Please RSVP so we know how many tools to provide. \nThis property is currently CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC except for special volunteer restoration events. \nTrespassing could impact the purchase process\, please don’t take the risk!

Through the use of UAVs\, or more commonly known as drones\, 3D maps can be created with only a single flight over the intended area. These maps produce great accuracy\, and are being used for many different projects\, including coastal cliff erosion\, beach erosion\, watershed monitoring\, among other new projects that students will venture into in the future. The AARR team is focused on finding the most useful aerial equipment being released\, ensuring all forms of applied research that have the potential to be improved with these new technologies have the best resources available to use. The AARR team is open to all new members willing to learn and who are passionate about science.

With the help of our wonderful community volunteers we aim to remove invasive species\, plant native trees and shrubs\, and restore this wildlife habitat. Come join us in this important restoration effort! \n\n\nRiver Restoration events are a part of VLT’s ongoing efforts to bring the Ventura River back to its natural state and make it more welcoming to human and wildlife visitors alike. Please wear pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes\, and don’t forget sunscreen and water. We’ll provide the tools\, you provide the enthusiasm!\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet VLT staff at 9 a.m. next to the Main St. Bridge along the bike path near downtown Ventura (at Main St. & Peking Streets). DESCRIPTION:Scientific Computing for Environmental Impact: Computational Analysis of Beaver Dams \nDr. Emily Fairfax\, CSUC \nBeavers are native to California – from the high Sierras all the way down to the coast. Beaver dams play a key role in protecting ecosystems during drought and in regulating the spread of wildfire. Unfortunately\, the European fur trade decimated their population and by the early 1900’s very few beavers remained in California. Today\, beaver populations are on the rebound – just in time to help us deal with increasingly intense wildfire seasons. But now there are so many beaver dams out there that figuring out where they are and the scale of their impacts is no trivial matter. In response\, beaver-scientists around the world are looking toward bigger and bigger data sets as we move beyond single-pond case studies and into landscape-scale modeling. But with big data comes big responsibilities. So what exactly do beavers do\, how do they protect us from droughts and wildfires\, and how can we embrace big data\, machine learning\, and scientific modeling to answer questions in traditionally fieldfocused disciplines? Come to this talk and find out – it’ll be a dam good time! \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fence repair day on Ormond Beach! The nesting habitat fences badly need repairs. We are removing damaged fences (T-posts and mesh) pulling posts out of ground and digging them out of dunes\,taking mesh fencing down and in some cases dug out of dunes\, rolled up and put into storage. We need people willing to work hard to do some very meaningful and important work for our endangered birds! Hours can be signed off on for service learning. \nCarpooling is reccomended. SUMMARY:AARR Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Aerial and Aquatic Robotic Research team (AARR) is allowing environmental research to now be completed faster and easier than ever before. Through the use of UAVs\, or more commonly known as drones\, 3D maps can be created with only a single flight over the intended area. These maps produce great accuracy\, and are being used for many different projects\, including coastal cliff erosion\, beach erosion\, watershed monitoring\, among other new projects that students will venture into in the future. The AARR team is focused on finding the most useful aerial equipment being released\, ensuring all forms of applied research that have the potential to be improved with these new technologies have the best resources available to use. The AARR team is open to all new members willing to learn and who are passionate about science.

SUMMARY:Native Habitat restoration at Yerba Mansa Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Come help restore native habitat in Rancho Sierra Vista Saturday\, October 5th from 9am to noon. \nThe Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon. This project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. DESCRIPTION:Come join the LPFA and Ojai Ranger District as we spend a day maintaining the lovely Potrero John Trail in the Sespe Wilderness. \nThe plan is to meet at the Ojai Ranger Station (1190 E Ojai Ave\, Ojai) at 8am and from there carpool up Hwy 33 approx 30 mins to the Potrero John trailhead. We’ll start working from the trailhead focusing on brushing and clearing any fallen trees from across the trail. We’ll stop sometime in the early afternoon either when it gets too hot or it’s time to head home. Return to Ojai and drive home feeling happy that we helped keep one of Ojai’s best trails open for people to enjoy. \nLPFA will provide tools and PPE\, please bring any food/drink you’ll need for the day and wear long pants and sunglasses. SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day- Lion Canyon Trail Maintenance\, Thomas Fire Restoration\, Ventura Backcountry
DESCRIPTION:The LPFA will be partnering with the Thomas Fire Trail Fund (TF2)\, the Ojai Ranger District\, REI and others to host a trail project along the beautiful Lion Canyon Trail outside of Rose Valley on the edge of the Sespe Wilderness. There has been no serious trailwork accomplished on this trail since the Thomas Fire and we’re hoping to make a big push towards bringing this excellent multi-use trail back to life. \nThe plan is to meet at Middle Lion Campground before 8am on Saturday September 28. *Camping may be available Friday night if needed\, contact us (Volunteer@LPForest.org) if interested. The tailgate talk will start at 8am and shortly after that we’ll break into teams to start the trail project. We’ll plan on working until 2pm or it gets too hot along the trail (fingers crossed for cool weather). Everyone should be back at Middle Lion by 3pm and from there we’ll return to nearby Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center for a BBQ\, prize raffle and trail-ebration! \nPost event BBQ and select beverages for the day will be provided\, please bring any food\, drink\, lunch and snacks that you’ll need for the day. All tools and PPE will be provided\, please wear sturdy boots\, long sleeved shirt\, pants and safety glasses (sunglasses are fine). We’ll have hard hats and gloves but you might want to bring your own if you have them (bike helmet is fine).
