DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 14th\, from 9 am – 12 noon\, join VLT for a fun family-friendly pollinator planting event at Harmon Canyon Preserve. This will be our first Monarch Madness event at Harmon Canyon\, so come on out and be part of this historical event! We will plant pollinator plants\, including milkweed\, that attract butterflies. \nMonarch butterflies need milkweed plants to survive – their caterpillars only eat milkweed and Monarch moms lay their eggs on the milkweed plant. Milkweed habitat loss is the biggest short-term threat to the migration of Monarch butterflies. \nJoin VLT volunteers as we pitch in to provide essential habitat for the migrating Monarchs and other insects\, birds and mammals. We will bring the gloves\, shovels and milkweed plants; you bring the enthusiasm! \nPark FREE at Missionary Church\, immediately adjacent to Harmon Canyon. DESCRIPTION:For all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! SUMMARY:Trail Restoration of Round Mountain- César Chávez Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning\, CSUCI will be headed back up Round Mountain/hukisunupahani lo’ka’aliyaš ’isatʰwiwa (we restore the path to sathwiwa) Part 2 on Friday\, April 3\, 2020 from 8:30 AM -1:30 PM. Located on the CSUCI campus\, Round Mountain\, sathwiwa\, is sacred to the Chumash people\, where ceremonies were conducted in the past and will be again. The first step to restoring this place of cultural significance is to create a trail to the top. The existing route\, a former road\, is in poor condition and covered with brush. Trail restoration will convert the road into a walking trail\, provide erosion control measures\, restore native plants\, and provide trail identification and educational signage. Participants will be clearing brush and removing root balls. All restoration effort is physical work and all volunteers will be using hand tools. Tools and refreshments will be provided. \nWhen: Friday\, April 10\, 2020\, from 8:30 AM-1:00 PM \nWhere: Meet at the Peace Pole (near the fountain in the Central Mall) no later than 8:30 AM. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 18th\, all are invited to join the Ventura Land Trust to help prepare Harmon Canyon Preserve for future public use. From removing invasive species to building new trails\, we can use your help to make Harmon Canyon the best nature preserve possible. \nVentura Land Trust is currently in the escrow for this fantastic preserve. During this process\, we would like to remind everyone that Harmon Canyon is currently CLOSED to the public. Any trespassing on the preserve could jeopardize the sale\, so please respect the process and only access the preserve during scheduled volunteer events.  In the meantime\, there is plenty of work to be done! We will be working on clearing brush to reduce fire hazards and building trails for the public to enjoy once we have our grand opening. \nPark FREE at Missionary Church\, immediately adjacent to Harmon Canyon. SUMMARY:Monthly Beach Clean-up Surfrider
DESCRIPTION:For all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! Thank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean. \nMeet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \n

DESCRIPTION:SRIRS Student Committee Club’s Speaker Series on campus will be held from 5:00-6:00 pm every 1st Wednesday and 3rd Thursday of each month. The goal of this series is to engage the student body with the community of the Channel Islands. Each speaker of the series will be asked to give a 30 minute talk about their work on the islands\, how they got to where they are in their career\, relationship (love affair) with the islands\, and possible ways for students to get more involved on and off island. \n

SUMMARY:River Restoration and Trash Cleanup at Willoughby Preserve
DESCRIPTION:In May\, we need your help chopping\, pulling\, and lopping non-native\, invasive plant species that are wreaking havoc on our native riparian ecosystem at Willoughby Preserve! Additionally\, we will be cleaning up trash across the preserve. Willoughby Preserve has come a long way over the years\, but it’s up to us to keep it trash free and chalk full of native plants. \n\n\nRiver Restoration events are a part of VLT’s ongoing efforts to bring the Ventura River back to its natural state and make it more welcoming to human and wildlife visitors alike. Please wear pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes\, and don’t forget sunscreen and water. We’ll provide the tools\, you provide the enthusiasm!\n\n\nMeet VLT staff at 9 a.m. next to the Main St. Bridge along the bike path near downtown Ventura (at Main St. & Peking Streets). We will gather next to the Land Trust’s beautiful Ocean Friendly Garden. SUMMARY:National Trails Day at Harmon Canyon
DESCRIPTION:On the first Saturday of June\, celebrate National Trails Day with Ventura Land Trust staff and volunteers to help build trails for future use at Harmon Canyon. This sneak peek of the preserve is your chance to come out and help build trails that will be used by the community for years to come. Ventura is lacking in public trails and we need your help to change that! \nVentura Land Trust is currently in the escrow for this fantastic preserve. In the meantime\, there is plenty of work to be done! We will be working on clearing brush to reduce fire hazards and building trails for the public to enjoy once we have our grand opening. \nPlease wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy closed-toe shoes (preferably hiking boots)\, sunscreen\, hat\, and reusable water bottle. We will bring gloves and tools\, though you are welcome to bring your own if you have a particular preference.
