DESCRIPTION:Come join Mountains Restoration Trust as we work with the National Park Service to restore native habitat in Newbury Park. You’ll be helping to maintain the land by removing invasive plants\, mulching\, and watering. We are working to return this critical habitat back to the oak woodland it once was after years of ranching and farming. The natives you will be maintaining include Coast Live Oak\, Valley Oak\, Western Sycamore\, and supporting vegetation in a riparian flood plain\, alongside Potrero Creek. \nAll Volunteers will need to bring the Volunteer Service Agreement signed and ready to go! \nThis event is great for all ages! Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.Volunteers under the age of 18\, must bring this form with a parent or guardian’s signature if the parent or guardian is not attending. \nRegistration is FREE\, but is required. SUMMARY:Crayfish Removal Open House
DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from your creeks and streams! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream. \nPARKING: You are free to park anywhere within reason. This is near a residential area\, so please be respectful of the folks who live there! \nOur staff will meet volunteers on the Medea Creek Trail\, which starts at the corner of Conifer Street and Parkview Drive. \nThis event is great fun for volunteers of all ages! Volunteers 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers under the age of 18 must bring the Parental Consent Form with a parent or guardian’s signature if the parent or guardian is not attending. \nRegistration is free\, but required. SUMMARY:SBCK Stream Team
DESCRIPTION:Santa Barbara Channel Keeper (SBCK) Stream Team: Join Surfrider and SBCK as we visit stations throughout the Ventura River watershed\, collect water samples\, and do some hands-on field analysis. Ventura Stream Team sampling events take place quarterly\, usually on the first Saturday of the corresponding month\, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Pizza and soft drinks are served afterwards. We meet at the corner of Julian St. and West Main Street in Ventura (approximately 239 West Main St.\, for Google Maps). \nStream Team volunteers use portable meters to test in-stream parameters such as temperature\, dissolved oxygen\, pH\, turbidity\, and conductivity. In addition\, samples are collected that are later analyzed in the laboratory for bacteria and nutrients. Visual observations such as weather conditions\, algae coverage\, water clarity\, odors\, and trash are also recorded on standardized datasheets. \nStream Team data is used by government agencies\, environmental organizations\, and other watershed stakeholders to help protect the watershed and the species that depend on it.\nThe goals of SBCK’s Stream Team Program are to collect and disseminate data to measure the health of local streams; identify and abate specific sources of pollution to these streams; measure trends or changes resulting from pollution prevention efforts; and foster environmental stewardship in our community by providing a rewarding outdoor volunteer opportunity for local citizens. Our ultimate goal is cleaner\, healthier water and a more environmentally responsible citizenry that is actively engaged in addressing the pollution problems plaguing our waterways. \nNew volunteers are always welcome and training will be provided. We do not recommend this activity for children under the age of 6. Children between the ages of 6 and 14 should be accompanied by a guardian. DESCRIPTION:Come join Mountains Restoration Trust for a morning outdoors at Juan Bautista de Anza Park! We’re working to restore the native grasslands in the west foothills. We’ll be planting native southern California plants\, like purple needlegrass and creeping wildrye and flowering perennials and shrubs. \nPlease arrive by 8:45 am and look for our group on the west side of the park. You can help in whatever way you’d like. SUMMARY:Monthly Beach Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! Thank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean.
