Through the use of UAVs\, or more commonly known as drones\, 3D maps can be created with only a single flight over the intended area. These maps produce great accuracy\, and are being used for many different projects\, including coastal cliff erosion\, beach erosion\, watershed monitoring\, among other new projects that students will venture into in the future. The AARR team is focused on finding the most useful aerial equipment being released\, ensuring all forms of applied research that have the potential to be improved with these new technologies have the best resources available to use. The AARR team is open to all new members willing to learn and who are passionate about science.

DESCRIPTION:Join Surfrider at one of our monthly beach cleanups!  Most of the items collected at beach cleanups are plastic that don’t truly biodegrade. It is important to host cleanups because we want to help protect the coastal wildlife that we love! Below you will find what to wear\, our liability waiver form\, where to park\, and the 2018 scheduled beach cleanups. \nMeet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street\, Ventura \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear: \ncomfortable clothes \nclosed toed shoes \nsunscreen \nAll volunteers are welcome to participate\, but must sign a liability waiver found here. \n*Pre-­registration is not required unless your group is larger than 25 people.* If you plan on bringing a group larger than 25\, please email Ryan with how many people you expect at: beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org \nVolunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. You can download the waiver again\, here. We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. \nPlease be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up. We need this information to help find solutions for the main sources of trash on our beaches! Check out what we found in 2015 and 2016. \nThank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean. Look for the Surfrider tent when you arrive at a beach cleanup to check in! \nWhere to park at C Street – The Surfrider tent and check in is located where C Street meets the Promenade. The most convenient parking is at the multi-level parking structure\, but they charge and we don’t validate. There are a couple of free parking options within a short walk. The free parking on Paseo De Playa often fills up quickly\, but the free parking off Front St. typically has space\, then you can take the walking bridge over the freeway to the promenade.

SUMMARY:Native Habitat Restoration at Yerba Mansa Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Come help restore native habitat in Rancho Sierra Vista Saturday December 7th from 9am to noon. \nThe Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon. \nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. SUMMARY:Big Rock Preserve Tree Planting- Ventura Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join Ventura Land Trust on Saturday\, December 14 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. to help plant trees and remove invasive species at the Big Rock Preserve. VLT staff and volunteers as will get down and dirty to prep the soil\, dig holes and create a beautiful arbor of trees that will provide shade\, scenery and solace to people walking\, hiking and enjoying nature at Big Rock Preserve. We will be planting an assortment of native trees and plants\, and removing some of those pesky invasive plants that always seem to pop up when nobody’s looking. \nVLT staff will provide the tools and direction and volunteers will provide the stoke! DESCRIPTION:The Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon.\nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Channel Keeper (SBCK) Stream Team
DESCRIPTION:Join Surfrider and SBCK as we visit stations throughout the Ventura River watershed\, collect water samples\, and do some hands-on field analysis. Ventura Stream Team sampling events take place quarterly\, usually on the first Saturday of the corresponding month\, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Pizza and soft drinks are served afterwards. We meet at the corner of Julian St. and West Main Street in Ventura (approximately 239 West Main St.\, for Google Maps). \nStream Team volunteers use portable meters to test in-stream parameters such as temperature\, dissolved oxygen\, pH\, turbidity\, and conductivity. In addition\, samples are collected that are later analyzed in the laboratory for bacteria and nutrients. Visual observations such as weather conditions\, algae coverage\, water clarity\, odors\, and trash are also recorded on standardized datasheets. \nStream Team data is used by government agencies\, environmental organizations\, and other watershed stakeholders to help protect the watershed and the species that depend on it.\nThe goals of SBCK’s Stream Team Program are to collect and disseminate data to measure the health of local streams; identify and abate specific sources of pollution to these streams; measure trends or changes resulting from pollution prevention efforts; and foster environmental stewardship in our community by providing a rewarding outdoor volunteer opportunity for local citizens. Our ultimate goal is cleaner\, healthier water and a more environmentally responsible citizenry that is actively engaged in addressing the pollution problems plaguing our waterways. \nNew volunteers are always welcome and training will be provided. We do not recommend this activity for children under the age of 6. Children between the ages of 6 and 14 should be accompanied by a guardian. SUMMARY:CSUCI Campus Biodiversity BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:BE A PART OF A CAMPUS-WIDE EVENT INVOLVING SPECIES IDENTIFICATION! \nThe BioBlitz is a new form of citizen science that has emerged in recent years. This type of ecological survey’s cost-effective and quick form of data collection make it an easy way to survey a given area’s biodiversity. Since the inception of California State University Channel Islands in 2002\, no formal ecological survey of the campus’s biodiversity has been conducted. The goal of this project was to conduct an all-inclusive survey for the local and CSUCI communities to exhibit the significance of both biodiversity and citizen science. For the designated biodiversity\, we surveyed three different biome types: edge\, campus\, and native. Within these zones\, we performed ecological surveys on and around the CSUCI campus.
