Ormond beach represents one of Southern California’s most important coastal habitats for recovery\, with several threatened and endangered plants and shorebirds—including the loveable snowy plover! \nJoin VLT\, TNC and Surfrider volunteers as we pick up trash in these sensitive habitats. We will bring the gloves and the bags\, you bring the enthusiasm! If you are interested and available\, RSVP to save your spot! \nMeet us at 9 am at the East entrance of  Ormond Beach Preserve at 301 E McWane Blvd. Oxnard\, CA 93033. We will then familiarize you with property and outfit you with everything you’ll need to help us clean up. Please wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, a hat\, sunscreen and bring a water bottle. DESCRIPTION:The Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon.\nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Channel Keeper (SBCK) Stream Team
DESCRIPTION:Join Surfrider and SBCK as we visit stations throughout the Ventura River watershed\, collect water samples\, and do some hands-on field analysis. Ventura Stream Team sampling events take place quarterly\, usually on the first Saturday of the corresponding month\, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Pizza and soft drinks are served afterwards. We meet at the corner of Julian St. and West Main Street in Ventura (approximately 239 West Main St.\, for Google Maps). \nStream Team volunteers use portable meters to test in-stream parameters such as temperature\, dissolved oxygen\, pH\, turbidity\, and conductivity. In addition\, samples are collected that are later analyzed in the laboratory for bacteria and nutrients. Visual observations such as weather conditions\, algae coverage\, water clarity\, odors\, and trash are also recorded on standardized datasheets. \nStream Team data is used by government agencies\, environmental organizations\, and other watershed stakeholders to help protect the watershed and the species that depend on it.\nThe goals of SBCK’s Stream Team Program are to collect and disseminate data to measure the health of local streams; identify and abate specific sources of pollution to these streams; measure trends or changes resulting from pollution prevention efforts; and foster environmental stewardship in our community by providing a rewarding outdoor volunteer opportunity for local citizens. Our ultimate goal is cleaner\, healthier water and a more environmentally responsible citizenry that is actively engaged in addressing the pollution problems plaguing our waterways. \nNew volunteers are always welcome and training will be provided. We do not recommend this activity for children under the age of 6. Children between the ages of 6 and 14 should be accompanied by a guardian. SUMMARY:CSUCI Campus Biodiversity BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:BE A PART OF A CAMPUS-WIDE EVENT INVOLVING SPECIES IDENTIFICATION! \nThe BioBlitz is a new form of citizen science that has emerged in recent years. This type of ecological survey’s cost-effective and quick form of data collection make it an easy way to survey a given area’s biodiversity. Since the inception of California State University Channel Islands in 2002\, no formal ecological survey of the campus’s biodiversity has been conducted. The goal of this project was to conduct an all-inclusive survey for the local and CSUCI communities to exhibit the significance of both biodiversity and citizen science. For the designated biodiversity\, we surveyed three different biome types: edge\, campus\, and native. Within these zones\, we performed ecological surveys on and around the CSUCI campus. DESCRIPTION:In February\, we need your help chopping\, pulling\, and lopping non-native\, invasive plant species that are wreaking havoc on our native riparian ecosystem at Willoughby Preserve! DESCRIPTION:Researchers at the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI)\, 5Gyres\, and University of Toronto recently completed a three-year project to monitor microplastics in the San Francisco Bay and adjacent national marine sanctuaries\, as well as the contaminant pathways of wastewater effluent and urban stormwater. DESCRIPTION:For all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! SUMMARY:Yerba Mansa Meadow-Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon.\nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources.
