DESCRIPTION:Come join Mountains Restoration Trust as we work with the National Park Service to restore native habitat in Newbury Park. You’ll be helping to maintain the land by removing invasive plants\, mulching\, and watering. We are working to return this critical habitat back to the oak woodland it once was after years of ranching and farming. The natives you will be maintaining include Coast Live Oak\, Valley Oak\, Western Sycamore\, and supporting vegetation in a riparian flood plain\, alongside Potrero Creek. \nAll Volunteers will need to bring the Volunteer Service Agreement signed and ready to go! \nThis event is great for all ages! DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from Medea Creek! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. DESCRIPTION:Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. SUMMARY:Surfrider Climate Education Project Application
DESCRIPTION:Applications due March 20th (or until all positions are filled)\nVolunteer orientation will be on March 24th \nPROJECT OVERVIEW \nThe Sufrider Climate Education Project (CEP) is a pilot project in Ventura County in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation and CivicSpark to educate the community about climate change and sea level rise through bite-size conversations and infographics. Education is the first step towards an engaged community. Climate change\, sea level rise\, and other coastal issues are complex problems that require the engagement of people of all walks of life. Starting in March 2018\, the CEP team will set up a booth at Surfrider’s monthly beach clean-up to bring climate education to volunteers and beach visitors. Through one-on-one conversations and flyers\, the team will spread the word about the local impacts of climate change. Teaching community members about the science and impacts of climate change and sea level rise will allow residents to make decisions that are more sustainable and equitable in their daily lives. To this end\, the CEP team is recruiting volunteers to help with education material development\, media outreach\, graphic design\, youth outreach\, and Spanish translation. This is a collaborative project and CEP team members will all equally contribute to shape this project into a successful education program. All team members will work with each other and with the project manager (Angela Kim). \nTIME COMMITMENT \nThis is a 5-month leadership position from March to July 2018. The monthly time commitment includes a monthly team meeting (2 hours)\, monthly beach clean-up (3 hours)\, and individual work (5-10 hours). Regardless of position\, all members are required to attend the team meetings and monthly beach clean-ups. The individual work will vary from position to position. In total\, the hours amount to **~10-15 hours a month**. \nOPPORTUNITY\nAs this is a pilot project\, team members will have ample opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the development of materials and outreach strategies. SUMMARY:Invasive Crayfish Removal
DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from Medea Creek! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream. \nRegistration is free but required. Registered volunteers will receive an email confirmation with more details. \nThis event is great fun for volunteers of all ages! Volunteers 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2018 Virtual Poster Showcase (VPS) is now open for registration and abstract submissions. Both graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to participate. VPS is a great opportunity for students to boost career potential\, build a resume\, and receive critical feedback-without the need to travel. \nThe Virtual Poster Showcase is a new opportunity that allows undergraduate and graduate students to present their research virtually\, alleviating any need to travel. Students not only get valuable feedback on their science\, but also gain experience in reviewing the research of other students. This affordable and accessible option is ideal for students\, and can help build their academic resume. \nThanks to a new collaboration with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI)\, beginning in the Fall 2017 showcase\, students who fully participate through the judging phase will have their abstracts included in GeoRef. Learn more about this exciting development by reading the announcement. \nStudents will first submit an abstract. The first author (and presenter) on the abstract must be an undergraduate student for the Undergraduate Showcase and a graduate student for the Graduate Showcase. \nAbstracts must be in English and submitted by the abstract submission deadline. The title is limited to 300 characters and the body is limited to 2000 characters (spaces and punctuation included). There is a $35 (US dollars) submission fee for all abstracts. \nAbstract submission deadline for the Spring 2018 Showcase is 13 March 2018 at 11:59 PM ET.
