You’ll be helping to maintain the land by removing invasive plants\, mulching\, and watering. We are working to return this critical habitat back to the oak woodland it once was after years of ranching and farming. DESCRIPTION:Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! SUMMARY:Invasive Weeds in Rock Art Country
DESCRIPTION:This area is one of the most amazing rock art havens on the Los Padres National Forest. The giant sandstone monoliths lining the canyon walls with beautiful\, wind-swept trees growing out of inhospitable crannies are peppered with rock art throughout.\nAt 5\,000 feet\, we are working on an acre patch of invasive knapweed\, removing flowers and any potential for this year’s seeds\, until more permanent methods can be employed.\nWe’ll camp overnight in this amazing location and enjoy a gourmet community feast. On Sunday\, we’ll continue our work in the morning\, and gawk at rock art in compliance with conservation protocols. SUMMARY:Potrero Creek Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Come join Mountains Restoration Trust as we work with the National Park Service to restore native habitat in Newbury Park. You’ll be helping to maintain the land by removing invasive plants\, mulching\, and watering. We are working to return this critical habitat back to the oak woodland it once was after years of ranching and farming. The natives you will be maintaining include Coast Live Oak\, Valley Oak\, Western Sycamore\, and supporting vegetation in a riparian flood plain\, alongside Potrero Creek. \nAll Volunteers will need to bring the Volunteer Service Agreement signed and ready to go! \nThis event is great for all ages! Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.Volunteers under the age of 18\, must bring this form with a parent or guardian’s signature if the parent or guardian is not attending. \nRegistration is FREE\, but is required. Many hands are needed\, and we welcome yours. We invite you to come dig\, weed\, learn\, teach\, ask questions\, take a shift on irrigation\, cook for our Saturday meals\, share ideas\, or donate materials or funding. You can help in whatever way you’d like. DESCRIPTION:If you’d like to volunteer with ESRM or need to work in an ESRM lab this coming semester\, you are required to attend a brief safety training with Emily Welsh prior to participating in lab activities. Emily will conduct safety training every Thursday morning at 8:30 am in the tech lab (on the second floor of Sierra Hall). The training will only last about 20 minutes and will give you time to make it to class by 9am. SUMMARY:Crayfish Removal Open House
DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from your creeks and streams! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream. \nPARKING: You are free to park anywhere within reason. This is near a residential area\, so please be respectful of the folks who live there! \nOur staff will meet volunteers on the Medea Creek Trail\, which starts at the corner of Conifer Street and Parkview Drive. \nThis event is great fun for volunteers of all ages! Volunteers 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers under the age of 18 must bring the Parental Consent Form with a parent or guardian’s signature if the parent or guardian is not attending. \nRegistration is free\, but required.
