DESCRIPTION:This area is one of the most amazing rock art havens on the Los Padres National Forest. The giant sandstone monoliths lining the canyon walls with beautiful\, wind-swept trees growing out of inhospitable crannies are peppered with rock art throughout.\nAt 5\,000 feet\, we are working on an acre patch of invasive knapweed\, removing flowers and any potential for this year’s seeds\, until more permanent methods can be employed.\nWe’ll camp overnight in this amazing location and enjoy a gourmet community feast. On Sunday\, we’ll continue our work in the morning\, and gawk at rock art in compliance with conservation protocols. DESCRIPTION:Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! DESCRIPTION:  \nCome join Mountains Restoration Trust for a morning outdoors at Juan Bautista de Anza Park! We’re working to restore the native grasslands in the west foothills. We’ll be planting native southern California plants\, like purple needlegrass and creeping wildrye and flowering perennials and shrubs. \nPlease arrive by 8:45 am and look for our group on the west side of the park. Parking is limited to street side spaces to avoid impacting parking for park visitors. Please bring a hat and a waterbottle\, and wear comfortable work clothes and sturdy closed-toed shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided for you. \nVolunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian. DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from Medea Creek! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream. \nRegistration is free but required. Registered volunteers will receive an email confirmation with more details. \nThis event is great fun for volunteers of all ages! Volunteers 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Surfrider Beach Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street. \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! Thank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean.

SUMMARY:Surfrider Climate Education Project Application
DESCRIPTION:Applications due March 20th (or until all positions are filled)\nVolunteer orientation will be on March 24th \nPROJECT OVERVIEW \nThe Sufrider Climate Education Project (CEP) is a pilot project in Ventura County in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation and CivicSpark to educate the community about climate change and sea level rise through bite-size conversations and infographics. Education is the first step towards an engaged community. Climate change\, sea level rise\, and other coastal issues are complex problems that require the engagement of people of all walks of life. Starting in March 2018\, the CEP team will set up a booth at Surfrider’s monthly beach clean-up to bring climate education to volunteers and beach visitors. Through one-on-one conversations and flyers\, the team will spread the word about the local impacts of climate change. Teaching community members about the science and impacts of climate change and sea level rise will allow residents to make decisions that are more sustainable and equitable in their daily lives. To this end\, the CEP team is recruiting volunteers to help with education material development\, media outreach\, graphic design\, youth outreach\, and Spanish translation. This is a collaborative project and CEP team members will all equally contribute to shape this project into a successful education program. All team members will work with each other and with the project manager (Angela Kim). \nTIME COMMITMENT \nThis is a 5-month leadership position from March to July 2018. The monthly time commitment includes a monthly team meeting (2 hours)\, monthly beach clean-up (3 hours)\, and individual work (5-10 hours). Regardless of position\, all members are required to attend the team meetings and monthly beach clean-ups. The individual work will vary from position to position. In total\, the hours amount to **~10-15 hours a month**. \nOPPORTUNITY\nAs this is a pilot project\, team members will have ample opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the development of materials and outreach strategies.
