SUMMARY:Native Habitat Restoration at Yerba Mansa Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Come help restore native habitat in Rancho Sierra Vista Saturday December 7th from 9am to noon. \nThe Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon. \nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. DESCRIPTION:Join Surfrider at one of our monthly beach cleanups!  Most of the items collected at beach cleanups are plastic that don’t truly biodegrade. It is important to host cleanups because we want to help protect the coastal wildlife that we love! Below you will find what to wear\, our liability waiver form\, where to park\, and the 2018 scheduled beach cleanups. \nMeet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street\, Ventura \nFor all beach cleanups\, please wear: \ncomfortable clothes \nclosed toed shoes \nsunscreen \nAll volunteers are welcome to participate\, but must sign a liability waiver found here. \n*Pre-­registration is not required unless your group is larger than 25 people.* If you plan on bringing a group larger than 25\, please email Ryan with how many people you expect at: beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org \nVolunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. You can download the waiver again\, here. We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. \nPlease be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up. We need this information to help find solutions for the main sources of trash on our beaches! Check out what we found in 2015 and 2016. \nThank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean. Look for the Surfrider tent when you arrive at a beach cleanup to check in! \nWhere to park at C Street – The Surfrider tent and check in is located where C Street meets the Promenade. The most convenient parking is at the multi-level parking structure\, but they charge and we don’t validate. There are a couple of free parking options within a short walk. The free parking on Paseo De Playa often fills up quickly\, but the free parking off Front St. typically has space\, then you can take the walking bridge over the freeway to the promenade.

SUMMARY:Upper Matilja Trail Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:The LPFA and Ojai Ranger District will be heading to the upper reaches of the Matilija Trail for our November ’19 First Saturday trail maintenance project. Should be a lot of fun! \nPlan on meeting at the Ojai Ranger Station at 7:30am on Saturday November 9 and from there carpool up Hwy 33 to Cherry Creek Road and up to to the upper Matilija trailhead near Ortega Hill. From there we’ll start working down the trail towards Maple Camp focused mainly on clearing brush and re-establishing the trail tread. If you like dirt work with great views\, this this is a project you’ll want to be on. \nWe’ll work into the early afternoon and then head back down to Ojai with an ear-to-ear smile having spent an incredible day in the wilderness working on a radical trail. Should be great! \nLPFA will provide the usual trail gear and PPE\, please wear sturdy boots\, long pants and sunglasses (eye protection). You’ll also want to bring any water/food you’ll need for the day. \nLet us know if you have any questions or to RSVP. Looking forward to it!

Ventura Land Trust is teaming up with Runners For Public Lands on October 26th to connect runners of all abilities and anyone who is interested to open space preservation\, outdoor recreation\, and habitat restoration. This sneak peek of the preserve is your chance to come out and help build trails that will be used by the community for years to come. Ventura is lacking in public trails and we need your help to change that! \nVentura Land Trust is currently in the escrow for this fantastic preserve\, this process could take over a year before we can purchase the property. In the meantime\, there is plenty of work to be done! We will be working on clearing brush to reduce fire hazards and building trails for the public to enjoy once we have our grand opening. \nThe event will start at 7:30 am with a run through the canyon (that is not yet open to the public outside of Ventura Land Trust led events) to preview the preserve that will go to 8:45 am. The volunteer work day will begin at 9:00 am where we will work on removing invasive plants\, clearing and preparing trails\, and restoring native habitats within Harmon Canyon. \nFor field work\, we ask that you please wear long pants\, long sleeves\, sturdy closed-toe shoes (preferably hiking boots)\, sunscreen\, hat\, and reusable water bottle. DESCRIPTION:The LPFA will be partnering with the Thomas Fire Trail Fund (TF2)\, the Ojai Ranger District\, REI and others to host a trail project along the beautiful Lion Canyon Trail outside of Rose Valley on the edge of the Sespe Wilderness. There has been no serious trailwork accomplished on this trail since the Thomas Fire and we’re hoping to make a big push towards bringing this excellent multi-use trail back to life. \nThe plan is to meet at Middle Lion Campground before 8am on Saturday September 28. *Camping may be available Friday night if needed\, contact us (Volunteer@LPForest.org) if interested. The tailgate talk will start at 8am and shortly after that we’ll break into teams to start the trail project. We’ll plan on working until 2pm or it gets too hot along the trail (fingers crossed for cool weather). Everyone should be back at Middle Lion by 3pm and from there we’ll return to nearby Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center for a BBQ\, prize raffle and trail-ebration! \nPost event BBQ and select beverages for the day will be provided\, please bring any food\, drink\, lunch and snacks that you’ll need for the day. It is important to host cleanups because we want to help protect the coastal wildlife that we love! SUMMARY:Ventura County Coastal Cleanup Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ventura Land Trust at  Emma Wood State Beach group camp area! Join as we clean and clear cigarette butts\, bottles\, trash and plastics from the area so it doesn’t end up polluting our ocean and wildlife. \nThis beautiful area has been neglected in recent times\, and we need the community’s help to deal with large trash piles that build up from illegal camping. Multiple endangered species call Emma Wood State Beach home\, and it’s one of the last natural sand dune systems in Southern California. Let’s work together and make it safe and clean for the plants and animals who live here! \n* Please wear a long sleeved shirt\, long pants\, and closed-toe shoes (preferably hiking boots) to this event. There is thick brush and poison oak present around the work area. We will be out in the sun so make sure to wear a hat\, sunscreen\, and bring a reusable water bottle! Please remember\, this cleanup will focus on trash removal from abandoned homeless encampments. Participants are likely to get dirty\, so please dress appropriately. \n* Please note: Cleanup volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Due to the nature bio-hazardous materials occasionally found at cleanups\, we do not encourage young children to participate in these events. SUMMARY:Round Mountain Restoration Project
DESCRIPTION:CSU Channel Islands invites students\, alumni\, faculty and staff to roll up their sleeves and participate in Round Mountain/hukisunupahani lo’ka’aliyaš ’isatʰwiwa (we restore the path to sathwiwa) Project on Saturday\, September 21\, 2019 from 8:00AM -1:30PM. Located on the CSUCI campus\, Round Mountain\, sathwiwa\, is sacred to the Chumash people\, where ceremonies were conducted in the past and will be again. The first step to restoring this place of cultural significance is to create a trail to the top. The existing route\, a former road\, is in poor condition and covered with brush. Trail restoration will convert the road into a walking trail\, provide erosion control measures\, restore native plants\, and provide trail identification and educational signage. Participants will be clearing brush and removing root balls. All restoration effort is physical work and all volunteers will be using hand tools.
