DESCRIPTION:On the first Saturday of June\, celebrate National Trails Day with Ventura Land Trust staff and volunteers to help build trails for future use at Harmon Canyon. This sneak peek of the preserve is your chance to come out and help build trails that will be used by the community for years to come. Ventura is lacking in public trails and we need your help to change that! \nVentura Land Trust is currently in the escrow for this fantastic preserve. In the meantime\, there is plenty of work to be done! DESCRIPTION:For all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! SUMMARY:Trail Restoration of Round Mountain- César Chávez Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning\, CSUCI will be headed back up Round Mountain/hukisunupahani lo’ka’aliyaš ’isatʰwiwa (we restore the path to sathwiwa) Part 2 on Friday\, April 3\, 2020 from 8:30 AM -1:30 PM. Located on the CSUCI campus\, Round Mountain\, sathwiwa\, is sacred to the Chumash people\, where ceremonies were conducted in the past and will be again. The first step to restoring this place of cultural significance is to create a trail to the top. The existing route\, a former road\, is in poor condition and covered with brush. Trail restoration will convert the road into a walking trail\, provide erosion control measures\, restore native plants\, and provide trail identification and educational signage. Participants will be clearing brush and removing root balls. All restoration effort is physical work and all volunteers will be using hand tools. Tools and refreshments will be provided. \nWhen: Friday\, April 10\, 2020\, from 8:30 AM-1:00 PM \nWhere: Meet at the Peace Pole (near the fountain in the Central Mall) no later than 8:30 AM. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 14th\, from 9 am – 12 noon\, join VLT for a fun family-friendly pollinator planting event at Harmon Canyon Preserve. This will be our first Monarch Madness event at Harmon Canyon\, so come on out and be part of this historical event! We will plant pollinator plants\, including milkweed\, that attract butterflies. \nMonarch butterflies need milkweed plants to survive – their caterpillars only eat milkweed and Monarch moms lay their eggs on the milkweed plant. Milkweed habitat loss is the biggest short-term threat to the migration of Monarch butterflies. \nJoin VLT volunteers as we pitch in to provide essential habitat for the migrating Monarchs and other insects\, birds and mammals. We will bring the gloves\, shovels and milkweed plants; you bring the enthusiasm! \nPark FREE at Missionary Church\, immediately adjacent to Harmon Canyon. SUMMARY:Yerba Mansa Meadow-Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Yerba Mansa Meadow restoration project seeks to restore/enhance approximately 10.8 acres of wetland\, riparian and upland habitat through invasive species removal and revegetation with native plants. This meadow is a good example of an ephemeral wetland that has yerba mansa as a dominant species\, and this is somewhat uncommon.\nThis project aims to restore native habitat\, and to improve habitat for bird roosting and nesting by introducing native plants that provide a variety of food sources. DESCRIPTION:For all beach cleanups\, please wear comfortable clothes\, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver\, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is\, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org ) We will provide all supplies\, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves\, trash bag/bucket\, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up—we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! DESCRIPTION:In February\, we need your help chopping\, pulling\, and lopping non-native\, invasive plant species that are wreaking havoc on our native riparian ecosystem at Willoughby Preserve! Additionally\, we will be cleaning up trash across the preserve. Willoughby Preserve has come a long way over the years\, but it’s up to us to keep it trash free and chalk full of native plants. \n\n\nRiver Restoration events are a part of VLT’s ongoing efforts to bring the Ventura River back to its natural state and make it more welcoming to human and wildlife visitors alike. SUMMARY:CSUCI Campus Biodiversity BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:BE A PART OF A CAMPUS-WIDE EVENT INVOLVING SPECIES IDENTIFICATION! \nThe BioBlitz is a new form of citizen science that has emerged in recent years. This type of ecological survey’s cost-effective and quick form of data collection make it an easy way to survey a given area’s biodiversity. Since the inception of California State University Channel Islands in 2002\, no formal ecological survey of the campus’s biodiversity has been conducted. The goal of this project was to conduct an all-inclusive survey for the local and CSUCI communities to exhibit the significance of both biodiversity and citizen science. For the designated biodiversity\, we surveyed three different biome types: edge\, campus\, and native. Within these zones\, we performed ecological surveys on and around the CSUCI campus. DESCRIPTION:Planning to work on Camuesa Trail! This will be a work and ride or a hike and work event – you choose! \nWe will be doing dirt work–building drainage features like rolling grade dips and knicks\, deberming and benching.
