DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 10\, 2018 – \n6:00pm to 7:00pm\n\nAssistant Professor of Environmental Science and Resource Management Dan Reineman will visit the Ojai Library at 1 p.m. on Saturday\, October 6\, 2018\, and the E.P. Foster Library at 6 p.m. on Wednesday\, October 10\, 2018\, to deliver a presentation titled “Managing (the Waves on) Our Coasts.” Reineman comes to us from CSU Channel Islands (CI) and is presenting as part of the Ventura County Library’s One County\, One Book program.\n\n\nCalifornia’s coast is full of important resources\, from fisheries and oil to tourism destinations like the Channel Islands. To manage any resource well\, we need information—data—about it. Waves for surfing are among the most important resources in coastal California. They support the recreation of millions and shape the economies and cultures of many coastal communities; surfing is now our official state sport. \nBut where will we get the data we need to ensure that waves and surfing can continue on our coasts? In this talk\, Reineman will expand on some of the key themes William Finnegan develops in Barbarian Days and connect them directly to contemporary coastal management challenges in California and right here in Ventura. Surfers might be at the heart of the issue\, but they share that space with anyone else who enjoys visiting the coast in California. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Mandatory Informational Meeting for UNIV 391 - Ecotourism and Marine Megafauna in Maui
DESCRIPTION:UNIV 392 is a 3-unit course\, open to all majors with no pre-requisites. The class will travel to the island of Maui\, Hawaii over 8 days during Winter 2019 to learn about local culture and conduct research on humpback whale behavior\, and to explore the interaction of manta rays with coral reef & reef fish communities. Following the field activities in January 2019\, students will analyze data and prepare posters/videos to communicate their findings to the wider campus community. All attendees must have health insurance during the time of the trip\, be able to lift 40 pounds\, and be in good physical condition.

SUMMARY:Crayfish Removal Open House
DESCRIPTION:Come help us remove crayfish from Medea Creek! Crayfish are a non-native species to California\, and they’re considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species\, reduce water quality\, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream. \nThis event is great fun for volunteers of all ages! Volunteers 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers under the age of 18 must bring the Parental Consent Form with a parent or guardian’s signature if the parent or guardian is not attending. \nRegistration is free\, but required. Registered volunteers will receive an email confirmation with more details.

DESCRIPTION:Come join Mountains Restoration Trust for a morning outside as we work to restore the vegetation in Malibu Creek State Park! \nWe will be planting native trees and grasses\, as well as removing weeds and invasive plants from the area. We will be planting natives like Coast Live Oaks\, Purple Needlegrass\, California Goldenrod and Hummingbird Sage. \nYou can enter the park through the main Malibu Creek State Park entrance\, and park in the lower day use area. There will be signs to guide you in\, and MRT staff to meet you there! Bring hat\, water\, snack\, and sturdy shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided. \nGreat Fun for Kids and Families!
