SUMMARY:Trail Restoration of Round Mountain- César Chávez Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning\, CSUCI will be headed back up Round Mountain/hukisunupahani lo’ka’aliyaš ’isatʰwiwa (we restore the path to sathwiwa) Part 2 on Friday\, April 3\, 2020 from 8:30 AM -1:30 PM. Located on the CSUCI campus\, Round Mountain\, sathwiwa\, is sacred to the Chumash people\, where ceremonies were conducted in the past and will be again. The first step to restoring this place of cultural significance is to create a trail to the top. The existing route\, a former road\, is in poor condition and covered with brush. Trail restoration will convert the road into a walking trail\, provide erosion control measures\, restore native plants\, and provide trail identification and educational signage. Participants will be clearing brush and removing root balls. All restoration effort is physical work and all volunteers will be using hand tools. Tools and refreshments will be provided. \nWhen: Friday\, April 10\, 2020\, from 8:30 AM-1:00 PM \nWhere: Meet at the Peace Pole (near the fountain in the Central Mall) no later than 8:30 AM. SUMMARY:CSUCI Campus Biodiversity BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:BE A PART OF A CAMPUS-WIDE EVENT INVOLVING SPECIES IDENTIFICATION! \nThe BioBlitz is a new form of citizen science that has emerged in recent years. This type of ecological survey’s cost-effective and quick form of data collection make it an easy way to survey a given area’s biodiversity. Since the inception of California State University Channel Islands in 2002\, no formal ecological survey of the campus’s biodiversity has been conducted. The goal of this project was to conduct an all-inclusive survey for the local and CSUCI communities to exhibit the significance of both biodiversity and citizen science. For the designated biodiversity\, we surveyed three different biome types: edge\, campus\, and native. Within these zones\, we performed ecological surveys on and around the CSUCI campus. This year\, we will remember Dr. King’s vision by serving at Food Share in the Senior Nutrition Garden. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a One-Man Sci-fi Climate Change Tragic Comedy! \nSwinging between urgency and irony\, the existential comedy of “Man Cave” finds the last man on earth broadcasting advice to whatever Klingons or Vulcans may still be out there listening. It integrates science\, economics\, politics\, ethics\, psychology\, history\, and religion to consider the collective action necessary to escape the looming existential void “with a lot more swagger and humor than [Al Gore] could ever manage.” (Orlando Sentinel). The play stirs a sudden active interest in Environmental Studies and makes an emotional case for action that bridges the divide between doubters and activists. \n

DESCRIPTION:Scientific Computing for Environmental Impact: Computational Analysis of Beaver Dams \nDr. Emily Fairfax\, CSUC \nBeavers are native to California – from the high Sierras all the way down to the coast. Beaver dams play a key role in protecting ecosystems during drought and in regulating the spread of wildfire. Unfortunately\, the European fur trade decimated their population and by the early 1900’s very few beavers remained in California. Today\, beaver populations are on the rebound – just in time to help us deal with increasingly intense wildfire seasons. But now there are so many beaver dams out there that figuring out where they are and the scale of their impacts is no trivial matter. In response\, beaver-scientists around the world are looking toward bigger and bigger data sets as we move beyond single-pond case studies and into landscape-scale modeling. But with big data comes big responsibilities. So what exactly do beavers do\, how do they protect us from droughts and wildfires\, and how can we embrace big data\, machine learning\, and scientific modeling to answer questions in traditionally fieldfocused disciplines? Come to this talk and find out – it’ll be a dam good time! \n
